Would You Trust A Doctor Dressed Like This?

A new study from the Society for Clinical Vascular Surgery came out recently and let’s just say… it wasn’t received well. The study aimed to identify “clearly unprofessional content” shared on social media by young vascular surgeons, such as HIPAA violations and criminal activity. Unfortunately, the study’s 3 male investigators also looked for “potentially unprofessional content” which included doctors posting photos holding alcoholic beverages and “provocative posing in bikinis/swimwear”. I was outraged by the gender bias in this study holding female doctors to a double standard, essentially saying if you’re a doctor or a woman in medicine you don’t get to enjoy legal activities such as having a glass of wine or taking a photo at the beach. I wasn’t alone, as the medical community on twitter came together with the hashtag #medbikini to denounce this study, and just the other day it was actually retracted by the journal. While that’s definitely a win, we need to continue to empower our medical professionals to live normal lives without fear of being authentic on social media, as it’s better for our mental health and truly helps us connect better with our patients.
Read the retracted study for yourself here: www.jvascsurg.org/action/showPdf?pii=S0741-5214%2819%2932587-X

I'm an energy healing and working on my herbalism certification + some others. I never liked the expectations for us to be perfect and filter who we are outside of our professional environment.

  • As a patient, I want a diagnosis. And then I want to g.t.f.o. If my doctor wants to sit butt naked in a nudist colony snorting coke off of a hookers derriere before drinking a beer funnel, and then post it on social media, I. Dont. Care. As long as they can diagnose what is wrong with me, their personal life is none of my business.

  • Seeing a doctor or nurse wear something other than scrubs in a hospital setting I would question their decision making, as there is no telling what fluids may get on them throughout the day, however, what doctors or nurses wear outside of work is not any of my business, and I would want whatever care I can get, as soon as I can get it if I was injured.

  • So what, do those people think that at the end of a Dr's day they should be hung up in the closet and taken out the next morning? Oh no, don't act like a human being that happens to be highly educated. No you have to be what a small number of narrow minded individuals believe you need to be in order to be a doctor. Despite what they think doctors cannot and should not be replaced with robots. Which is pretty much what those small minded individuals are trying to convince us of. Oh no don't go out and have a glass of wine with your dinner, don't go swimming at the beach (but if you must you need to be completely covered from head to toe!), oh and don't participate in conversations that others may not like. I'm going to end my already long comment now because I'm struggling not to type how I really feel. Which spoiler alert would contain ALOT of swears and insults.

  • I don't understand this people. What they would wear on the beach? A formal suit? Clothes have they time and space and while you would NOT be correct being a doctor and using a swimsuit during operation (because of hygiene issues. Blood can get everywhere) you are ALSO NOT correct to expect doctors using scrubs on the beach (Just think of the tan lines). And for the feminist that will probably say they can wear anything anywhere, just imagine being being attended by a male doctor in a speedo, which is basically swimming briefs with even less coverage when some bikinis. Uniformes like white coats exist for the reason to identify and, in this case, make patients trust easier on professionals wearing them.

  • Women wearing bathing suits to the BEACH???!! Or the pool???? What next! Do these brazen hussies have no shame??? Wow, is it the year 1915 up in here? And it's totally ridiculous to ban a person in pretty much any profession from talking about politics on their own accounts because guess what? Politics have everything to do with our every day lives and jobs, that's interwoven into the fabric of our society and we all play a part, these issues aren't something that exist in a separate bubble that we can pretend have nothing to do with us. I've seen people in a vast array of professions have their social media accounts checked up on and questioned because they talked about things like social justice on twitter/facebook. Nobody has any right to try to control what people do outside of work on their own time. Human beings have every right to opinions about issues that involve all of us, whether we want to acknowledge it or not. People SHOULD be speaking out if something is wrong or unjust.

  • It is so sad to see how far we haven’t come. It sadly is not just medicine, many in persevered by some members of society as male jobs, suffer too. Back in my twenties, 1st proper ‘researcher science job’ my degree had afforded me, i mentioned to my boss i was thinking of applying for one of the phd positions within the research centre we both worked for. It would mean for 3 years he would have my salary paid for by the grant instead of his budget. Win win. He looked at me dumbfounded. You’ll never get a phd looking like that, waving in my direction. i was wearing (like everyone) jeans & a tshirt when i looked at my clothes then back upto him confused he said ‘no i mean you’. He waved his hand towards my breasts & then did the hour glass shape then pointed to my face & told me i was too pretty & too ‘hour glass shape’ done again. He said i wouldn’t be taken seriously. i talked with my new work colleagues, some of whom were on the phd system, and they all said he probably did have a point. These comments can’t always be easily laughed off or overcome. The anorexia of my teenage years, (brought on by the attention i had gotten when i was too young to cope) & which had meant many months in hospital, came back with vengeance. After i crawled myself outta that hole again i never did the phd. But it is ok, txs to my anorexia they told me i had insanely low chance of having my own child. She is 15 next month. Phd or her? i am happy how my life turned out. To her the idea that someone can be judged by their appearance, sex, colour, sexual orientation just makes no sense. She first asked me to explain racism at about 8. She sat there saying no i dont get it. I tried to explain it again & again (i was getting tbh a wee bit frustrated) then i realised she wasnt saying she didn’t understand my explanation she was saying it sounded impossible that people would judge other people like that. i was first in my family to go to university, but i am more proud of myself that thanks to my input (and others ofc) my daughter thinks all the ‘isms’ are illogical & ridiculous, i am bit proud of her too, but you know its mainly me lol. Its the only way this is going to change educating the young & it is not just the schools job its ours too. Sorry wrote an essay but just in case one person reads this & says sod it i wanna be a Dr, a scientist, an engineer researcher even material scientists:-P its your brain that counts not your bra size. Sorry again.
